Glissade by Wales and Wales for Meta EnglandContemporary (A glissade: a gliding ballet step, a perfectly controlled and smooth extension of the leg to the side.) Since the 18th century, the writing desk has become a shop window for the display of a cabinet makers’ skills. Glissade is a powerfully restrained writing-desk that subtly updates this important tradition. It is so named because the desktop gently slides open, across a graceful pair of legs, which extend to one side, at an angle. The smooth, polished desktop is made from blonde, rippled ash with a hint of olive taken from a single ash tree, one hundred years old. The careful matching of the grain shows a balance and consistency of tone that is especially difficult to achieve. The only clue to the hidden catch is the marketry ‘M’ inlaid in the desktop. By pressing this gently, the desktop glides open to reveal a hiding place lined with butter-soft leather. The legs are the darker, rippled olive-ash, from the tree’s highly prized core, with its dark grain that deepens with age. Glissade, like the ballet movement, is perfectly balanced, whether open or closed.
